Residents who frequent Lay Park and Heard Park need to mark their calendars for temporary closures coming up at the end of this month and the start of the next. The two popular local parks are set to hit a brief pause on activities due to some much-needed electrical updates at their community centers.
The first on the schedule is Lay Park's community center at 297 Hoyt St., which will be taking a day off on Tuesday, April 29. Not far behind, Heard Park’s facility located at 400 McKinley Dr., has its downtime slated for Monday, May 5. If you had plans to shoot hoops, or attend a yoga class in those community havens, well, you’ll need to rejig your schedule.
According to a notice from the Athens-Clarke County government, these closures are strictly for necessary electrical work, signaling that safety and functionality are at the forefront for the community spaces many residents hold dear. While disruption is always a bit of an inconvenience, ensuring everything is up-to-code is a good enough reason to bear with it.
Officials haven’t released specific details on the nitty-gritty of the electrical work, but rest assured, they’re likely on top of it. For those who find themselves at loose ends or, simply want more details on the when and why of the closures, the county has offered up a helpline. Give them a ring at 706-613-3800 and they can, fill you in on the specifics.
