Three men have faced the consequences of their actions as they were sentenced after pleading guilty to multiple charges related to an armed home invasion in Canton, Georgia, each man's fate sealed in the courtroom for their part in the 2022 crime. Kaiden Pridgen, now 19, and Cibias Vieira, 23, agreed to the weight of charges including first-degree home invasion, criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, and kidnapping, amongst others. The Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit reported that the pair were given a 35-year sentence, the first 25 to be spent behind bars, while their accomplice, 22-year-old David Kelley, faced separate prosecution, earning a 20-year sentence with five in confinement for selecting the target residence and driving the getaway vehicle, as Atlanta News First reported.
This saga began when Cherokee County deputies responded to 911 calls from a residence on Lower Birmingham Road, where Pridgen and Vieira, donning masks and gloves, broke into the home, seeking a large sum of money from a man who previously lived there; the duo menaced the current homeowners with a semi-automatic pistol, and left empty-handed after a fruitless search although not before one owner was physically assaulted with the firearm, leaving them visibly injured, in a vault for finding no cash to plunder, and according to FOX 5 Atlanta, cell tower records and damning social media posts of the two with firearms and cash led to their eventual identification and arrest.
Cherokee County District Attorney Susan K. Treadaway remarked on the decision to prosecute the then-16-year-old Pridgen as an adult, highlighting the violence of the crime and the public's safety necessity, as cell tower records and incriminating social media posts helped identify the invaders. Describing the impact of the crime, Assistant District Attorney Megan S. Hertel stated, "Home invasion is among the most terrifying of crimes because it involves invading the sanctity of a person’s home," stressing the psychological robbery suffered by the victims, who were "robbed of their peace of mind, which is something that can never be replaced," as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
