In a recent incident, two 13-year-old males were arrested following a dangerous pursuit and a shots-fired investigation in Indianapolis, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. A post on the IMPD News Facebook page stated that the apprehension occurred earlier today after officers on patrol heard gunshots and saw a black car speeding away from the 200 block of South Meridian Street.
The pursuit began shortly after midnight yesterday, when officers attempted to stop the vehicle, which subsequently crashed into another car, causing minor injuries to an uninvolved driver. One suspect was immediately apprehended, while the other was located with assistance from a drone officer and the IMPD K9 division. During the follow-up investigation, a loaded firearm and marijuana were found inside the stolen vehicle, and nearby buildings were found to have sustained damage from gunfire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the shots fired.
IMPD's Chief Chris Bailey expressed deep concern over the involvement of young teenagers with firearms and their engagement in risky activities such as evading police. "It is concerning any time we see young teens with guns and involved in dangerous behavior like a police chase. This is not just a law enforcement issue - this is a community issue,” said Chief Chris Bailey. “Parents, we need you to step up. Know where your children are, who they are with, and what they are doing. Our young people deserve better, and that starts with all of us holding them and ourselves accountable," he added in a statement obtained by IMPD News.
The two adolescents now face multiple charges including dangerous possession of a firearm, resisting law enforcement, possession of marijuana, auto theft, and leaving the scene of an accident. While the investigation remains active, with authorities seeking additional information, all suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will decide on the final charges. Anyone with pertinent information is encouraged to contact IMPD Downtown District Detectives at (317)327-6500 or Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS to report anonymously.
