The University of Cincinnati Clermont College is launching a new initiative for its Manufacturing Engineering Technology program, designed to give its students a tangible experience of the manufacturing world. Starting in fall 2025, it is compulsory for incoming students to engage in cooperative education, coupling textbook knowledge with the hands-on tasks that await in real-world jobs.

Under this new plan, recently detailed by UC's news portal, enrollees will find themselves in semester-long paid internship slots with local employers, tasked with tasks that echo their classroom lessons. "This new program will help bring skills learned in class to life and help students gain advanced footing in their careers now and in the future," Manufacturing Engineering Technology Coordinator Doug McPhillips conveyed in a statement obtained by UC News. The hope is that experience on the manufacturing floor will render newly minted graduates not just conversant with theory, but adept with equipment, technical drawing interpretation, and the nitty-gritty of problem-solving that industries crave.

UC Clermont's program is designed as a launchpad for various manufacturing sector positions, equipping students with a comprehensive knowledge base: lean manufacturing, project management, additive and subtractive manufacturing, computer-integrated manufacturing, robotics, computer-aided design, and the art of problem-solving. McPhillips told UC News about the trifecta that makes their offering stand out: "a great facility, strong curriculum, and good relationships with industry leaders in the area." As an aside, notable industry giants like Milacron, Nestle’ Purina, and L3Harris are regularly scooping up UC Clermont alumni.

The manufacturing industry is rife with positions that need to be filled, and the program anticipates a faster transition from graduation to gainful employment. According to the same UC News article, manufacturing is a field filled with opportunity, especially now. Their students tend to secure jobs quickly, thanks to the hefty demand for skilled workers.
