To foster a more harmonious relationship between the University of Cincinnati students and the surrounding communities, newly elected student body president Joshua Copley is taking steps to bridge the gap. Copley, a third-year student majoring in criminal justice and political science from Dayton, implores students to actively participate in creating a vibrant community. In an announcement made by the university, he suggests students can get involved by initiating or engaging in local events, responsibly hosting off-campus parties, and forming steadfast connections with the neighborhoods many students call home.
"Improving off-campus relations between students and nearby neighborhoods is one of my passions," Copley told the University of Cincinnati news. He spoke about his aim to build a stronger community on and off campus. To truly make an impact, efforts must extend beyond the UC campus borders to include and actively engage the surrounding areas.
Copley resides in the CUF neighborhood, a unique blend of student life and local residences named after the Clifton Heights, University Heights, and Fairview communities. It sprawls to the south and west of the Uptown campus, with a high student population. The new student body president appears to be acutely aware of the balancing act required to maintain amiable relations between students and longtime residents.
The university's communication emphasizes the importance of these goals, highlighting that such initiatives are crucial to creating equitable and enjoyable living experiences for everyone involved. Copley's passion for the cause extends to his residency amid this dynamic, occasionally uneasy, coexistence. By encouraging students to host gatherings safely and smartly, he hopes to foster an environment where mutual respect and collaboration can thrive.
