As the University of Utah prepares for the 2025 football season, the safety group is under the spotlight, featuring senior Rabbit Evans, alongside juniors Tao Johnson and Nate Ritchie, a Cedar Hills native. Ritchie, after completing a two-year mission in New Hampshire, returned to the Utes in time for the 2023 season and has since made a tangible impact on the team’s defensive strategies with his presence in 23 games and special teams expertise. Last year, the academic All-Big 12 selectee notched a career-high nine tackles in a victory over Baylor, Utah Utes News.

In the heat of spring practice, Ritchie reflected on the team's advancements and his learned experiences. "It's been really good. It's been tough. Obviously, there are places we've been in improving in as a team. It's been a good time for us to be able to develop and continue to grow. Our coaches are putting us in positions to get better and to be able to compete, so its been a really great time," Ritchie said, as per Utah Utes News. He goes on to describe the influence of his coach, "Probably the biggest thing is he tells us all the time to have confidence and that he's not going to give us any false confidence," pointing to the significance of both trust and film study under the guidance of Coach Scalley.

This seasoned safety hasn't kept his insights to himself, extending wisdom to the newer players, cultivating a culture of shared learning and mutual improvement. "It just takes time, going out there and watching film with people. Whenever we're watching film, I'll always give my input just like when I was watching film with other people, they always give their input, giving tips and tricks on how to find things and how to remember them so you can produce out on the field," Ritchie explained, as obtained by Utah Utes News.

The number 6 has seen a return on Ritchie’s jersey, not for reasons of superstition, but rather performance, "I really like the number six. I feel like I've done some really good things in this number, so when the opportunity came, I thought I might as well come back to it," he said, as noted by Utah Utes News. Off the field, Ritchie's mission trip taught him life's deeper values, "That's a pretty deep question because there are a lot things that I learned, not only learning about my true purpose here as a human being and my true identity as a child of God," he shared, underpinning the significance of kindness and community. And for those curious about the regional delicacies, yes, the maple syrup in New England gets his seal of approval, "It's wonderful, it's really, really good," Ritchie assured.
