Illinois producers in six counties recently hit by severe weather events have a new resource to turn to. The United State Department of Agriculture (USDA) has rolled out the availability of low-interest emergency physical loss loans, aiming to assist with the damage caused by February's storms, floods, and landslides. Eligible counties include Alexander, Gallatin, Hardin, Massac, Pope, and Pulaski, as confirmed in a press release from the state's agriculture department.
For farmers grappling with the aftermath, these loans offer a financial lifeline. According to a statement obtained by the Illinois Department of Agriculture, the agency's Director, Jerry Costello II, remarked, "Extreme weather can cause extensive, expensive damage to Illinois farms." He urges producers in the stricken areas "should contact their local USDA Service Center to confirm eligibility." While intended to support recovery efforts, navigating the application process and meeting eligibility criteria may pose challenges for some affected farmers.
The USDA's aid comes in the form of low-interest loans via the Farm Service Agency (FSA), meant to help farmers rebuild essential agricultural entities, such as essential farm buildings and permanent crops. Moreover, the loans can be applied to replace or repair equipment, livestock, and even deal with losses of harvested or stored crops.
Farmers seeking guidance on these relief options can utilize a suite of tools provided by the USDA. Available on the farmers.gov website, resources such as the Disaster Assistance Discovery Tool and a "Disaster Assistance-at-a-Glance" fact sheet spell out the specifics. As part of the announcement, the Loan Assistance Tool can help producers weigh their options. If producers want to file a Notice of Loss or learn more about the programs they can avail themselves of, their first point of contact should be at the local USDA Service Center, advises the agriculture department.
