Utah State University is setting the stage for innovative thinking with their upcoming 2025 Horizons Challenge scheduled for April 11, where the winning team will snag a $4,000 grand prize. The competition will also recognize four runner-up teams, each pocketing $1,500 for their efforts. According to USU Today, since October, undergraduate teams have been diligently brainstorming solutions to critical global issues spanning Space, Energy, AI, and more.
The Office of Research at USU has been playing host to this challenge, providing a platform for collegiate minds to dive into some of the most pressing concerns of our times, ranging from Climate Change to Mental Health. The office's Program Leader, Will Gold, imparted excitement for the upcoming event, stating, “We’re excited for the presentations and to learn how Horizons encouraged undergraduate students to explore their research interests and contribute to solving real-world problems,” as USU Today reports.
With the presentations and subsequent awards ceremony slated from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at the Eccles Conference Center Auditorium, the event is shaping up to be a showcase of fresh ideas and collaborative innovation. It's not just a contest; it's a convergence of young visionaries ready to propose actionable solutions in a world thirsty for change. Gold hopes that the event will demonstrate the value of student collaboration and the potential impact of their fresh perspectives.
Open to the public, the event presents an opportunity for community members to witness the fruits of these ambitious projects. The variety of challenges tackled by teams, such as Cybersecurity and Housing, underscores a sweeping determination to look beyond the ivory tower and engage with the tangible issues that shape our shared reality. As Gold shared, as per USU Today, “Hopefully everyone who attends will see how this competition is a unique opportunity for students to work together, learn new skills and make a difference.”
