Minneapolis residents focused on making their streets safer will want to clear their Monday evening plans. Ward 9 Council Member Jason Chavez announced an upcoming Community Open House to discuss traffic calming projects across 11 locations within the ward. According to a recent social media post by Chavez, the meeting is set for April 28th from 5:00pm to 6:30pm at the Powderhorn Park and Recreation Center.
The council member's post thanks neighbors for their advocacy and emphasizes their crucial role in shaping the improvements. Chavez states, "Thank you for your advocacy on improving traffic safety in our community. Your input has helped shape this year’s traffic calming projects." The selected locations for the upcoming work include stretches of road such as 11th Ave S, 13th Ave S, and Andersen Ln, amongst others, all of which have been identified as areas in need of safety enhancements.
At the Open House, those attending will have the chance to learn about the process, ask questions, and provide input on the projects. Clarifying the purpose of the event, Chavez explains, "You will have an opportunity to learn more about the process, ask questions, and provide input on traffic calming projects in your neighborhood." This initiative aligns with the increasing community-driven efforts across Minneapolis to address traffic safety concerns.
The specifics regarding the nature of the traffic calming measures have not been disclosed. However, they may potentially include interventions like speed bumps, extended curbs, or narrower roads—all aimed at reducing vehicle speeds and improving pedestrian safety. Residents of Ward 9, particularly those in the vicinities of 35th St E and Andersen Ln, where numerous accidents have reportedly occurred in the past, have expressed support for such safety measures.
