San Diego commuters are advised to prepare for a significant traffic detour this weekend. A major portion of Genesee Avenue will be temporarily closed to facilitate pipeline installation related to the City’s Pure Water Program. The affected segment, located at State Route 52, will be closed to through traffic beginning at 7 PM on Friday and will remain inaccessible until the early morning hours of next Monday.

This 72-hour closure is necessary to allow construction crews to install critical sewer bypass and pipeline infrastructure. The work is part of Phase 1 of the Pure Water San Diego initiative, an ambitious citywide effort to transform the water system into a more sustainable model by converting recycled water into safe, drinkable water using proven purification technologies.

During the closure, northbound traffic on Genesee Avenue will be redirected eastbound onto SR-52, with a detour leading north to Nobel Drive via Interstate 805. Southbound motorists will be rerouted westbound onto SR-52, continuing on to Regents Road.

According to the City’s Public Utilities Department, Director Juan Guerreiro emphasized the importance of the project, stating, per the City of San Diego, “This pipeline project is vitally important for the City’s Pure Water project.”

Motorists are encouraged to anticipate traffic delays and plan accordingly. Detour signage will be prominently placed at key intersections, including Governor Drive and Appleton Street, with additional guidance provided by Caltrans.
