According to a Facebook post by Weymouth Police, the events unfolded late evening around 9:30 p.m. at the Stop & Shop on 700 Middle Street. Store staff reported a male, later identified as Brian Pettiford, was caught stealing merchandise and, when confronted, threatened them with a knife before fleeing the scene in a black sedan.
The rapid response team of the Weymouth Police Department managed to locate the suspect's vehicle shortly after, at 789 Middle Street, and during a careful traffic stop, they detained Pettiford without further ado. The search of the vehicle revealed multiple knives, including a black folding knife on the passenger floorboard, confirming the initial reports of the armed nature of the suspect.
58-year-old Brian Pettiford, resident of 66 Fountain Lane in Weymouth, is facing charges of armed robbery and shoplifting by concealment. He was held on a $5000.00 cash bail and is expected to be arraigned at the Quincy District Court.
