Over the weekend, the prom night for Winter Springs High School took a concerning turn as multiple students were hospitalized after becoming ill from sneaking in alcohol, according to school officials. The event, hosted at SeaWorld Orlando, quickly escalated from a night of celebration to a situation involving increased police presence and emergency medical care.
The officials from Seminole County Public Schools, carrying out the duty of overseeing student wellbeing, reported that "some students snuck in small containers of alcohol concealed in clothing and proceeded to get drunk." As a result of their actions, several students became sick and required hospitalization. However, the exact number of those affected has not been released. ClickOrlando aimed to gather additional information from Orange County Fire Rescue but has not received a response yet.
Principal Peter Gaffney of Winter Springs High School addressed the incident in an email to parents, disclosing the evening's events and confirming that the students responsible had been identified.
In light of the incident, the school district has issued a stern warning, as reported by FOX 35 Orlando, stating that such behavior will not be tolerated at any school event. Despite the alarming incident, the prom continued as planned, albeit with a heightened police presence meant to prevent further disruptions. Additionally, Principal Gaffney urged parents to discuss the incident's seriousness and potential consequences with their children. Despite the expected disciplinary actions to follow, the overarching message was ensuring all attending students' safety and well-being.
