In a move to increase safety on the roads during the construction season, the Wright County Board of Commissioners has designated April 21-25 as National Work Zone Awareness Week, as stated in an announcement made by Wright County's official website. Board Chair Darek Vetsch emphasized the critical nature of this resolution, noting, "As thousands of men and women move forward to repair our streets, it is of great timeliness that we pass this resolution recognizing National Work Zone Awareness Week in Wright County April 21st to April 25th."
The annual campaign coincides with the beginning of the roadway construction season, a time known for an increase in worksite hazards the campaign’s focus centers on encouraging safe driving behaviors through these potentially dangerous areas, and Assistant County Administrator Marc Mattice, reflecting on the homegrown significance, said “We have a lot of our highway maintenance staff, engineers and surveyor’s staff out on the roads this time of year,” while he also explicitly mentioned the visibly marked road work in Annandale that signals the season's start is imminent.
With a theme of “Respect the zone so we all get home” for 2025, the urgency is rooted in harrowing statistics: in 2022, work zone incidents resulted in 891 fatalities, including 742 drivers and passengers, according to the same official proclamation from Wright County.
Mattice underlined the overarching goal, asserting “We just want everyone to be aware of the importance of safety for our highway workers, engineers, surveyor’s staff and contractors that will be working on projects throughout the construction season,” his words a call to action for motorists to abide by posted speed limits, eliminate distractions, and pay heed to the presence of road workers, understanding that while no driver enjoys slowdowns due to construction, patience and caution on the roads are a small price for safeguarding human lives.
