The Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency has recently secured a $290,630 grant aimed to enhance pedestrian and bicycle safety in the region. The grant, originating from the California Office of Traffic Safety and funded through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is set to bolster the agency's ongoing efforts to make the streets safer for those who travel by foot or on two wheels.
Launched two years prior, the Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program is expected to use the funds to further conduct community bike and walk audits, notably in areas with a history of pedestrian and bicyclist injuries or fatalities. In an effort to comprehensively reduce these troubling statistics, the program also aims to provide bicycle training courses specifically designed to educate the youth on how to safely navigate the roadways. This includes initiatives to properly fit and distribute helmets to those in dire need, according to the Yolo County announcement.
Beyond training and gear, the HHSA's initiative will also take to local schools with educational presentations, as well as organize community bike rides and walking field trips for older adults. These outings are not just for recreation—they're educational tools intrinsically, set to instill valuable and potentially life-saving riding and pedestrian practices.
The program additionally plans to offer crucial training for crossing guards, these unsung resources responsible for the safeguarding of safety at crosswalks. This practical education aims to directly impact those at greatest risk, including individuals experiencing homelessness. "The safety of people walking and biking on our roads is a top priority for our office," Office of Traffic Safety Director Stephanie Dougherty stated. "Everyone moves, and not always by car. It’s important that we invest in efforts to protect people walking, biking, and rolling that help establish a strong traffic safety culture where everyone on California roads can travel to and from places safely," Dougherty told Yolo County news.
With the program set to continue through September this year, Yolo County HHSA is on track to foster a culture of awareness and responsibility among drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.
