Attention all canine enthusiasts and community supporters – Hillsboro Stadium will come alive with the pitter-patter of paws as the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Sheriff’s Office Foundation, hosts its 18th Annual Washington County K9 Trials on May 17. This family-friendly event promises a day filled with demonstrations of K9 agility, speed, and the special bond between handler and dog.
The K9 units, trained dedicatedly to protect, will compete in a range of events, including area search and suspect apprehension among others. Each dog, striving to fetch gold, silver, or bronze medals, will be judged for their swiftness. An overall winner will be named based on a point system evaluated across all events. Families set out for some entertainment can also enjoy the community and vendor fairs, starting at 10 a.m., with the main event kicking off at 11 a.m.
While spectators will get their share of adrenaline as the dogs bolt and bound through the agility course and tackle the suspect apprehension challenge, the trials aim to showcase the critical skills these four-legged officers possess. For those yearning to get up close and personal with these canine heroes, a meet-and-greet session is on the agenda after the competition. It’s a rare opportunity for the community to connect with the K9s and their handlers and to better understand the vital work they do.
Attendees are advised that, wholeheartedly welcomed to bring family and friends, it is necessary to leave their pet companions at home - although service animals are an exception. Food and beverages will be available for purchase for those looking to snack while they watch the trials.
