Nineteen malnourished dogs were rescued from a rundown home in Katy, described by officials as a "dog house of horrors." Rescuers found the mixed-breed dogs in a deplorable state, with signs of mange amidst the chewed-up walls of a dilapidated three-bedroom house, according to FOX 7 Austin. The animals, discovered in squalid conditions with standing water and boarded-up windows, prompted a response from Harris County's Constable Alan Rosen, who stated, "This was truly a dog house of horrors." The dogs were found on May 15, some five days after their owners claimed to have left the property.
The investigation led by the Harris County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office's Animal Cruelty Unit, alongside the Houston SPCA and a Precinct 5 deputy, also unearthed the decaying remains of three other dogs. In their efforts to escape, the dogs had managed to chew through the interior walls to freely move in and to quickly get out. A hearing is scheduled for May 21 to decide whether the owners should regain custody of the dogs, as reported by KHOU.
The current caretakers, the Houston SPCA, are providing medical attention and care to the rescued dogs. The owners, who allegedly abandoned the dogs on May 10, are at the center of an ongoing criminal probe. The findings from the investigation will be forwarded to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office to ascertain if charges are appropriate.
As the legal process unfolds, community members are urged to stay vigilant against animal cruelty. Officials encourage anyone with information or suspicions about such acts to immediately contact the Houston SPCA at 713-869-7722. "The scene was deplorable," Constable Rosen told FOX 7 Austin, highlighting the severity of the conditions these animals were left in. Such calls could truly mean the difference between suffering and safety for animals in distress.
