An 8-year-old girl is in critical condition after being struck in the head by a stray bullet during a shootout in Algiers. According to the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), the incident occurred around 1:52 p.m. in the 2900 block of Lawrence Street. Police believe the child was inside her apartment when the bullet entered through a window, as WDSU reported.
The girl's uncle, Edwin Brown, spoke with FOX 8 Live, expressing shock over the incident and recalling that the child had been playing just the day before. He shared a toy sticker she had been using, which he said he would keep.
Local activist Mike Willis told FOX 8 Live he is concerned about increasing gun violence, especially with children spending more time outdoors during the summer.
According to WWLTV, NOPD spokesperson Reese Harper urged anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111. Calls can be made anonymously. The investigation is ongoing.
