Concerns for public safety intensified as a Palm Beach County judge ruled to keep 22-year-old Damien Allen in custody without bond after he was accused of planning mass shootings and interacting with a teen involved in a deadly school shooting.
During the court proceedings, Judge Delilah Weiss described, “The nature and circumstances are so incredibly alarming in this case.” Evidence included exchanges between Allen and Natalie Rupnow, the 15-year-old school shooter, as well as Allen’s possession of a significant arsenal of firearms and ammunition. Investigators also discovered that Allen had impersonated law enforcement officers; he owned several uniforms complete with badges and various insignias that initially appeared to be official. These details were uncovered through social media and during a subsequent search of his residence. Investigators further noted that Allen had never denied making threats, as detailed in a statement obtained by WPBF.
Allen's defense argued that the collected evidence such as weapons, tactical gear, and uniforms were components of an elaborate online gaming persona, emphasizing that all of Allen's firearms were legally purchased and that there was no prior record of impersonation or fraud committed by him, according to the defense attorney Elizabeth Ramsey in a WPBF interview. However, the prosecution, represented by Adriana Lopez, asserted the planning depth and array of gear Allen possessed was too serious to overlook, saying “He is a level of a sophistication that is frankly scary,” during the court session.
Sheriff Ric Bradshaw earlier remarked on the gravity of the case, noting, “There is no doubt in my mind that they have stopped a mass shooting that was going to happen. This guy was ready to go, had all the equipment, had the propensity to do it. It's just a matter of what day was going to set him off to go do it," as reported by CBS12.
Allen is facing multiple serious charges, including making mass shooting threats and impersonating a police officer. Authorities found a large cache of weapons at his home, along with body armor and high-capacity magazines, raising concerns about his intentions. Due to mental health concerns and the potential risk he poses to the community, a risk protection order has been filed to seize all of his firearms. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office says Allen’s extensive mental health history increases the threat level.
