An Atlanta family is grappling with the devastating loss of 10-year-old A’erica Dixon, who was killed when a tree toppled onto their home during a storm. The tragic incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Saturday on Mims Street SW. A’erica was at home with her mother, grandmother, and three other relatives at the time. Their lives were abruptly shattered when nature’s fury rendered its ruthless verdict, as reported by WYMT.
According to a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, the girl's aunt, Erica Melson, shared a harrowing account of the moments leading up to the catastrophe, "They told me they kind of heard some thundering and lightning, and then once the thunder hit, then the tree just kind of fell, and then they ran in the room, and my mom couldn't move, and then they couldn't find A'erica. So, underneath the tree is where she was." Emergency responders, who reached the scene swiftly after the tree's collapse worked for hours alongside public works crews to dismantle the fallen oak, a quiet and unassuming sentinel turned agent of sorrow in mere moments.
A'erica, a fourth-grade student at KIPP WAYS Academy, perished from the impact, while her mother and grandmother were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, both are expected to recover from their injuries. The devastating news of the young girl's passing prompted reaction from Gov. Brian Kemp, who expressed his condolences on social media stating, "This morning, we’re saddened by the tragic passing of this young girl as a result of last night’s storms," according to a post highlighted by WYMT.
Akiylah Dixon, A'erica's 14-year-old sister, recounted to Atlanta News First the terrifying ordeal, saying, "The house just started shaking. Everything just crashed, and I just saw my mama running through the hallway to get to my grandma," and disclosed how the incident left her devastated, "I broke down really badly, because that wasn’t just my little sister. That was my best friend." Amidst the grief, the American Red Cross stepped in to offer assistance, and a GoFundMe page has been set up by a relative to help with funeral expenses for A'erica, encapsulating a community's effort to bind up the unforeseen wounds inflicted in an instant.
