Atlanta Police confirmed the arrest of Derrick Dalton on charges of murder, following the death of a male victim from a gunshot wound last year. According to the Atlanta Police Department, Dalton was taken into custody on Monday, by Zone 6 officers and then transported to Dekalb County Jail. The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into a shooting incident that occurred on July 14, 2024.
The case dates back to late in the evening of that July day, when officers were called to 1572 Hardee St. and found the victim with a gunshot wound. Initially, the disagreement seemed to have escalated over a basketball that had repeatedly landed on the victim’s property. In the aftermath of the shooting, the victim was rushed to a hospital by Grady EMS. It wasn't until November 8, 2024, that he was pronounced deceased due to complications related to the gunshot injury.
While details at the time were sparse, investigators have been piecing together the sequence of events that led to the fatal dispute. In a recent statement, the police department disclosed that "the preliminary investigation indicates the victim died as a result of complications from sustaining an apparent gunshot wound." This tragic outcome is a stark reminder of how quickly altercations can turn deadly.
