An observant witness and a coordinated response between local police and state authorities led to the apprehension of a shoplifting suspect in Auburn, Massachusetts. The Auburn MA Police Department reported that officers received a call from Macy's at the Auburn Mall last Thursday, May 15, where a male had allegedly stolen a significant amount of property and then fled the scene on foot.
The subsequent search effort benefited greatly from a community member who took the initiative to report suspicious activity, effectively illustrating the "See Something, Say Something" program in action. According to the Auburn Police Department, a female witness noticed a man emerging from a bush before taking off, which she deemed odd enough to quickly inform the law enforcement officers scouring the area. This essential tip allowed officers to precisely narrow down the suspect's possible escape route.
In a strategic move, a perimeter was set up with the support of the State Police, leveraging the synergy of ground units and technological aids. A K9 unit, along with a drone, was deployed to further assist in the manhunt. "K9 Biza quickly picked up the suspect’s scent and tracked through an extremely wet marsh and thick wooded area," the Auburn Police Department stated.
Admirably performing her duties, K9 Biza managed to seamlessly lead officers directly to the suspect, who was found hiding behind a residential property, concealing himself beneath an old hunting blind. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Mr. Jeffrey Bates of Baldwinville, was arrested without incident and faced multiple charges, including shoplifting over $250, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and disturbing the peace. His bail was set at $500 by the court.
