According to The Detroit News, Jeter, who received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the university, told the crowd, "The key to what's going to separate you is passion: passion for what you do, passion for who you are."
Before an audience that included nearly 10,000 graduates, Jeter reflected on his career trajectory and the crucial decisions that shaped it. Despite making 56 errors in his first professional season, Jeter's commitment to baseball never wavered, forming the crux of his lessons for the graduates. His address also contained personal anecdotes, like his choice to skip a fishing trip for baseball practice as a teenager, which UMich shared.
In addition to reflecting on personal choices, Jeter spoke of the importance of community and finding comfort in times of uncertainty.
