The 10th annual Warrior Hike Challenge invites outdoor enthusiasts to tackle the arduous El Cajon Mountain trail in El Capitan County Preserve this Memorial Day weekend. With its steep inclines and minimal shade, the El Capitan trail is often regarded as one of the toughest in the county – and for good reason. According to a report, hikers can choose their adventure, opting for distances that align with their abilities, with turnaround points set up at 1- and 3-mile marks. Those feeling particularly intrepid can forge ahead for the entire 11-mile summit round-trip.
The event, which kicks off at 7 AM on May 24 with a flag raising and Pledge of Allegiance by a local scout troop, is a nod to the physical resilience and mental grit often associated with military training, making it fitting for the Memorial Day weekend. "Women in the Wild" will lead the early morning festivities, followed by a guided hike to the earlier-mentioned turnaround stations, starting at 7:30 AM, the County of San Diego reports. Adding to the commemorative spirit, participants are eligible to receive a 10th anniversary challenge coin for completing the hike, and those who complete both Memorial Day and Veterans Day events will earn a special champion coin.
The Warrior Hike Challenge, launched in 2015, has become a biannual event, with concurrent hikes on Veterans Day weekend. It's free and open to the public and their leashed canine companions. However, Parks and Recreation officials caution potential hikers to consider the strenuous nature of the trail before deciding who or what to bring along.
For those planning to attend, it's advised to come prepared with over a gallon of water if you're summit-bound, sturdy hiking boots, and sun protection. Although the event officially wraps up at 4 p.m., park staff will be available throughout the day for guidance and support. The trailhead can be found at 13775 Blue Sky Ranch Road in Lakeside, with additional parking across the street at Oakoasis County Preserve and along Wildcat Canyon Road.
