Hassan Chokr, a man with a prior felony conviction, has entered a guilty plea to the charge of illegal firearm possession following a disturbing incident at a local synagogue in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Chokr's outburst involved targeting Jewish parents and their children with aggressive antisemitic slurs.
Reportedly, Chokr shouted profanities and attacked the community's support for Israel as families were accompanying their preschool-aged children inside the synagogue. He then proceeded to visit a Dearborn gun store, where he was found to illegally handle and attempt to quickly purchase multiple firearms including a shotgun, a rifle, and a semi-automatic pistol. During this process, Chokr made false statements on his background check form, denying his felony conviction in an effort to bypass legal constraints and secure his armaments.
Further unsettling revelations included Chokr's remarks while awaiting the background check. "He indicated that he would 'even the score' and use the guns for 'God’s wrath,'" United States Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. said in a statement acquired by the Justice Department's announcement. These comments, made in conjunction with his attempt to obtain the firearms, escalated the gravity of his actions markedly.
The repercussions for Chokr, now awaiting sentencing, could involve up to 15 years of imprisonment. His sentencing is scheduled for September 24, before United States District Court Judge Jonathan J.C. Grey. As for societal implications, the prosecution's commitment stands firm. "We will not allow anyone to terrorize our Jewish neighbors. We are committed to protecting every American and their right to live and worship free of fear," said Gorgon. These charges stem from a collaborative investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and are being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Frances Carlson, as detailed by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
