In light of a recent tragedy where a 5-year-old boy lost his life after being struck by a Boston Public Schools bus, city councilors Ed Flynn and Erin Murphy are calling for a comprehensive review of the district's hired drivers. The incident, which took place in Hyde Park last month, has raised significant concerns over the safety protocols and driver qualifications, prompting the councilors to demand an immediate response. According to NBC Boston, the councilors specifically want to delve into the hiring, training, and compliance certification practices of bus drivers employed by Boston Public Schools.
Councilors Flynn, and Murphy have been forthright about the urgency of the inquiry, emphasizing that the safety of Boston's children on school buses is “non-negotiable” and critical systemic failures must be addressed. Their proposed order for a hearing, which was filed today, stresses the necessity for thorough vetting and monitoring of school bus drivers. This action comes after the involved driver, Jean Charles, had an expired certification on the day of the crash, and faced multiple previous collisions that same day, including contacting two parked cars, as reported by Boston Herald.
The order underscores the dire need for an investigation into the accident, especially given the driver's history and the fact he was allowed to continue driving post-incident. Boston Public Schools currently provides daily transportation for roughly 22,000 students, and as such, the councilors are pushing for an evaluation and an enhancement of real-time safety protocols. These protocols aim to closely monitor driver behavior, ensure swift reporting of incidents, and identify potentially dangerous misconduct.
The grieving family of Lens Arthur Joseph, the victim, recently laid their son to rest and their lawyer, Matthew Fogelman, expressed their commitment to prevent such incidents in the future. In a statement obtained by NBC Boston, Fogelman shared their resolve for change. Meanwhile, Mayor Michelle Wu has also been in touch with Transdev, the company responsible for training the district's bus drivers and is awaiting a comprehensive review of the accident and the procedures that were in place, the prevention of future tragedies is a priority.
