Efforts to rein in the perils of moped and scooter violations saw a day of reckoning on Thursday in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood during "Operation Safe Scooter." The Boston Police Department announced that the crackdown, which was conducted to address local community safety concerns, led to the towing of eight mopeds/scooters, court summonses for eight operators, and the arrest of one individual for possession of stolen property.
The initiative, spearheaded by the officers from the District D-4 (South End/Back Bay), focused primarily along the bustling Boylston Street, where complaints of unsafe vehicle operations have spiked. Trayvon Tercy, a 20-year-old from Mattapan, was the individual arrested in the sting operation after he was found operating a stolen scooter and consequently charged with Receiving Stolen Property. Upon his arrest, the scooter was recovered and returned to its rightful owner. Tercy is expected to face the Boston Municipal Court to answer for his actions.
Although the operation met with significant success, police reports indicate that there were other moped and scooter operators who evaded the law. The responses ranged from high-speed escapes to abrupt detours onto side streets, all in a bid to avoid police contact. Despite these setbacks, the Boston Police Department remains steadfast in its goal of maintaining traffic safety across the city's precincts.
