During a routine patrol in Mattapan yesterday, a Boston Police officer from District B-3 conducted a traffic stop around 12:19 PM near Westmore Road and Gilmer Street after observing a motor vehicle violation.

According to the Boston Police Department release, the stop escalated into a physical struggle when the officer attempted to detain the driver, identified as Richard Raymond, 33, of Dorchester. During the altercation, Raymond’s firearm discharged, but no one was struck. The officer called for backup, prompting a swift response from multiple units.

Raymond was eventually taken into custody. Officers recovered a Canik TP9SFx handgun with a magazine containing 14 rounds and a spent shell casing jammed in the weapon. His vehicle was impounded pending a search warrant.

Further investigation revealed a live round and a bag of marijuana in Raymond’s jacket. Inside the vehicle, police found 14 grams of fentanyl, 15 non-prescribed pills, and approximately $1,888 in cash.

Both the officer and Raymond were treated at the scene by Boston EMS for non-life-threatening injuries.

Raymond faces multiple charges, including unlawful possession of a large-capacity firearm, possession of ammunition without an FID card, drug trafficking, and motor vehicle violations. He also has four active warrants for similar offenses. His arraignment will take place at Dorchester District Court.
