After a pause that lasted nearly a year, Brightline has reintroduced its South Florida commuter pass with a significant price increase. The pass that formerly allowed riders 40 one-way trips for $399 has surged to $899, marking a 125% upswing in costs, according to NBC Miami. The restructured pricing offers additional options for passengers, including a 20-ride pass for $549, and a 10-ride pass for $299.
Some commuters have expressed concerns over the heightened expense. "The thing for me with Brightline is, it is expensive. Like, it’s nice, but it’s expensive to use on a regular basis," Rochelle Irons from Palm Beach Gardens told CBS News Miami. The new per-ride cost effectively has more than doubled, escalating from approximately $10 to $22.50 for the monthly 40-ride offering.
Brightline halted the original pass program in June 2024, attributing the decision to increased ridership and shifting operational priorities. Despite the price hike, the company insists that there are still savings to be captured when compared to standard ticket fares. On weekdays, round-trip fares from Miami to Orlando can fluctuate between $48 and $79, as exhibited on Brightline's website.
Last January, Brightline received federal funding exceeding $33 million, which aimed to add more trains to the current lineup, thereby amplifying both capacity and frequency. "The new Brightline Passes offer a reliable, modern ride with a fixed-rate fare to get frequent travelers where they need to go," Brightline stated in a May 6 press release. This investment in infrastructure is expected to ease some of the financial burden for riders who are now faced with heavier fees to maintain their commute. Meanwhile, individuals like Beckey Deland from Orlando see Brightline as a cheaper and more comfortable alternative than flying. "The train was a good way to come because it was inexpensive and it was much better than trying to fly down here," Deland mentioned to CBS News Miami.
