A South Florida jury has convicted a repeat sex offender, Michael Gordon Douglas, on multiple federal child exploitation charges. The 48-year-old from Escondido, California was found guilty of seven counts of Distribution of Child Sexual Abuse Material ("CSAM") and one count of Attempted Enticement of a Minor to Engage in Sexual Activity after a five-day trial in Fort Pierce, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida.

The U.S. Attorney's announcement detailed that in October 2023, Douglas, engaging in correspondence within an online forum centered around incest and other sexual taboos, believed he was communicating with a mother of an eight-year-old girl. During their months-long communication, he shared explicit photos and videos, as well as provided guidance on grooming her child for future sexual interaction with him. Plans for a disturbing Halloween event were also discussed, where Douglas offered to deflower the child at a drug-induced orgy.

The incident escalated when Douglas attempted to flee upon spotting law enforcement on the day of a supposed rendezvous, prompting a woman in his vehicle to alert officers to a supposed grenade in his possession. This led to a standoff with a SWAT team, ending when Douglas surrendered a replica grenade. Searches of his vehicle produced a range of items specified during his planning, including sex toys and a unicorn stuffed animal, which, as per the evidence presented at trial, were procured hurriedly the day before the ominous meeting. Sentencing for Douglas is scheduled for August 25, and he faces 15 years to life in federal prison, as was reported by the Department of Justice.

This case was a component of Project Safe Childhood, a national movement started by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to tackle the widespread issue of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program synergizes federal, state, and local agencies to locate and prosecute internet-based exploiters of children, as well as facilitate the rescue of victims. Further details about Project Safe Childhood can be viewed on the Department of Justice's website.
