On May 27, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the El Paso Bridge of the Americas made a significant cocaine seizure, intercepting 45.2 pounds of the drug concealed in a vehicle. The driver, identified as a 20-year-old U.S. citizen, was attempting to enter the United States from Mexico when she was stopped by CBP. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the narcotics were skillfully hidden within the vehicle's rocker panels.
The discovery unfolded in the morning when the young woman drove a 2016 Hyundai Elantra into the primary inspection area of the border crossing. A CBP officer directed her to a secondary examination after a preliminary check. During this more thorough inspection, a CBP canine alerted to the scent of narcotics, prompting officers to conduct an in-depth search of the car, including a nonintrusive x-ray scan. This screening revealed irregularities in the vehicle’s structure where the cocaine was stashed. "Every drug load that we prevent from reaching its intended destination makes a difference," CBP El Paso Port Director Ray Provencio remarked, as per U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The confiscation of the illicit goods led to the arrest of the driver, who now faces legal consequences for her actions. CBP officers handed her over to the El Paso County Sheriff's office, where she will face charges for the attempted smuggling. This incident is a testimony to the vigilance of the CBP officers who are tasked with curbing the flow of illegal substances into the country.
