Carnaval SF is back this weekend, transforming Harrison Street in the Mission District into a colorful expression of heritage and community. From 11 AM to 6 PM on Saturday and next Sunday, the streets will come alive with a free two-day celebration that will draw crowds.
This year, the revelry is adopting the theme "AfroMundo: African Diaspora in the Americas," which seeks to honor the global impact of African culture. As per SFMTA, the festival celebrates "the enduring resilience and cultural brilliance of the African diaspora." Carnaval organizers aim to showcase this creative legacy, which has shaped the Americas and inspired generations worldwide.
If you want to catch the Grand Parade, mark your calendars for next Sunday. Starting at 11 AM, more than 60 cultural contingents and over 3,000 performers will take to the streets, beginning at 24th and Bryant and proceeding to Mission Street. According to SFMTA, tickets for Grandstand Seating can be purchased for those wanting an upfront view of the vibrant performance spectacle.
Given the expected street closures and parking challenges, Muni is your best bet for getting there. SFMTA advises travelers to look for rerouted lines, including the 12, 14, 14R, 22, 27, 33, 48, 49, 55, and 67 buses. Adding to convenience, the agency also provides resources to help visitors effectively navigate the festivities, acknowledging that street closures will occur from 9 AM to 4 PM on the day of the parade.
