Coral Springs is set to celebrate Juneteenth with an evening dedicated to community, culture, and comedy. The Coral Springs Center for the Arts is throwing its doors open for the city's annual Juneteenth festivities on Friday, June 20, starting at 5:30 p.m., announced the city's official event page.
The event promises a live DJ and small bites to keep the energy high. Attendees can look forward to vibrant performances from Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. and Tenille Brown. Designed with families in mind, the event includes an activity area specially for children, alongside complimentary admission to the Coral Springs Museum of Art. These features are offered free of charge, courtesy of sponsors Baptist Health and Xfinity. Following the day's festivities, the mood shifts to one of humor as Marlon Wayans takes the stage for his Wild Child Tour. While the celebration during the day is free, those looking to end their night with a burst of laughter can purchase tickets for the show, which begins at 8 p.m.
Commissioner Joshua Simmons, who has the distinction of being the first Black commissioner of the city and a staunch Juneteenth advocate, expressed his anticipation for the event. "Juneteenth is a day to celebrate how far we’ve come and reflect on the work that still lies ahead," Simmons stated. "This event is about bringing people together through food, culture, and laughter—and I can’t wait to see our community show up for such a meaningful evening," as noted by the City of Coral Springs website.
For the uninitiated, Juneteenth holds a special place in American history. Commemorated on June 19, it signifies the date in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their emancipation, over two years after Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.
