The Cincinnati community is mourning the loss of 18-year-old Ryan Hinton, who was laid to rest during a ceremony at Avondale's Living God Church. The tragic event unfolded beneath a sea of red, Hinton's favorite color. WLWT reported that the service took place last Saturday with Hinton's grieving family and friends in attendance.
Amid the sorrow, tensions in Cincinnati were palpable as masked men, armed with rifles, stood vigil outside the church for the duration of the service. Hinton's death has not just sparked grief, but controversy, following the fatal shooting by a Cincinnati police officer on May 1. The Cincinnati Enquirer detailed that police were initially responding to a report of a stolen vehicle, which led to Hinton's untimely death after law enforcement claimed he pointed a gun at an officer.
Following the incident, controversy further spiraled as Ryan Hinton's father, Rodney Hinton Jr., was accused of an act of vengeance against law enforcement, hitting a Hamilton County sheriff's deputy with his vehicle the next day. He now faces aggravated murder charges, with the community left to grapple with the consequences of another young life taken and another family torn apart by events that began with a stolen car and ended with the loss of two lives—one ended by a bullet, the other possibly by the gavel of justice.
Ryan Hinton's funeral was described as a private affair, with media barred from entering the church and from speaking directly to the family members, according to Local 12. Meanwhile, demands for an independent review of the shooting have grown louder. The Hinton family's attorneys from the Cochran Firm have joined in to investigate the shooting independently. Cincinnati's Police Homicide Unit has yet to quickly complete its review and hand it over to the Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office for a prosecutorial decision.
Despite the ongoing investigations, Cincinnati Police Chief Terri Theetge has already deemed the officer's actions in the shooting as "justified," which was reported in an interview that Chief Theetge gave to WLWT. The identity of the officer involved remains withheld by the Cincinnati Police Department pending the outcome of the investigation. The fractured community awaits answers to the many questions surrounding the events of early May, with each new detail potentially catalyzing the search for both accountability and closure in the wake of Ryan Hinton's untimely death.
