A Dallas cyclist and a motorist were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after a harrowing incident on the roads of Mesquite last Saturday. Garland police were in pursuit of a domestic violence suspect when the chase escalated into an unpredictable series of crashes involving multiple cars and a bicyclist. The suspect, identified as Justin Johnson, 33, led the officers on a high-speed pursuit after allegedly assaulting a female family member, prompting a quick response from local law enforcement.
According to NBC 5, the sequence of events began in Garland, where the police were notified of an assault at an apartment complex on Bay Island Drive. The pursuit was already underway when Jim Martin, the cyclist, was struck from behind by Johnson's vehicle. Martin miraculously clung to the hood of the speeding car for more than a mile before being thrown off in another collision at the intersection of Gus Thomasson Road and Interstate 30. Despite the chaos that ensued, his most severe injury was later reported to be a broken arm.
While the pursuit continued, Johnson's desperate attempts to evade capture led to the additional collision with two other vehicles at a traffic light. Drugs thrown from the vehicle being chased were determined by officers during the chase, as reported by FOX4 News. Friends of Martin and fellow cyclists at the scene recounted the horror, with one rider, Greg Murff, telling NBC 5, “In a fraction of a second, it went from normal to just insane.”
After the collisions, the suspect attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by Garland police. Johnson now faces charges including evading arrest, causing serious bodily injury, assault – continuous violence against the family, and tampering with evidence. According to police statements acquired by FOX4 News, Johnson also had an active parole violation warrant issued by the Austin Parole Board, though details on the violation have yet to be disclosed.
