The Maricopa County Attorney's Office has taken a decisive step in the case against Sencere Hayes, accused of the 2023 murder of Mercedes Vega, as prosecutors pursue the death penalty upon conviction. This development follows the harrowing discovery of Vega's body in a burned car on Interstate 10, near Tonopah, leading to Hayes being charged with a spate of crimes, including first-degree murder, vehicle theft, armed robbery, and kidnapping involving death, as detailed in a FOX 10 report and further clarified by ABC15.
In the wake of the court's filing, details have surfaced linking the crime to Hayes’s alleged motive to eliminate Vega as a witness. The trial is set to reveal the extent of Vega’s suffering in her final moments. Although Hayes maintains his innocence with a plea of not guilty, his next hearing is scheduled for June 3. This development emerged shortly after Vega’s family expressed a sense of relief and gratitude to the state for prioritizing their daughter's case. In a moving statement obtained by FOX 10, her parents, Tom and Erika Pillsbury, said: "Anyone who knows us knows that we’ve been waiting for a long time for any justice in Mercedes case and we are so grateful that the state has decided to make her a priority and make sure that she receives the justice that she so deserves my wife and I feel like there’s been a weight lifted off of our shoulders And now we can put our trust in the justice system and now we know that we’re not the only ones fighting for her and we are grateful to Maricopa county is attorney’s office Maricopa county sheriffs office and the state of Arizona."
The grim narrative of Vega’s death includes her abduction from her Tempe apartment parking garage in April 2023, the subsequent vehicular arson, and disturbing findings such as bleach in her throat and a medical examiner’s report indicating death by smoke inhalation. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has hinted at the potential for further arrests in the case, signaling a broader investigation that may yet unfold. More details about the case can be found in coverage by ABC15, including the Pillsburys’ statement expressing heartfelt thanks to those offering prayers and support to ensure their daughter is remembered.
Notably, Mercedes Vega had been a victim of armed robbery in Phoenix years earlier, an event that prompted her move and led to her identification of a suspect, Cudjoe Young. Although he is not currently charged in her death, he was mentioned by Erika Pillsbury in a recounting of that traumatic time. Hayes’s connection to Young is implied by their shared residence in Chattanooga, Tennessee. If sentenced to death, Hayes would become one of Arizona’s youngest death row inmates.
