A missing person case from 2016 has been resolved after the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed the discovery of Lee Anthony Funderburk’s remains. Funderburk, who was 53 when he was reported missing on May 31, 2016, was last seen at his home in the 9900 block of Clairemore Place, as per the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department release.
The case remained unsolved for nearly nine years until a 911 call on Wednesday last week, led the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office to a scrapyard, where skeletal remains were found. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assisted in the search. Investigators discovered a vehicle registered to Mattie Mae Funderburk, Lee's mother, at the scene.
The remains were identified as Lee Anthony Funderburk through forensic examination. The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the cause of death as homicide. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has notified Funderburk's next of kin.
The case is now being treated as a homicide investigation. Authorities have not released information on suspects or the circumstances of his death.
