The Georgia Department of Corrections welcomes a new superintendent to the helm of Smith Transitional Center. Announced by GDC Commissioner Tyrone Oliver, Deidra Edwards steps up to oversee the facility and its 210 male residents, taking effect from today. Edwards, who has been part of the department since 2003, brings a long history of roles to the superintendent position, signaling the GDC's confidence in her capabilities to lead.
Edwards' path to leadership began as she joined the department as a Correctional Officer at Georgia SP and steadily rose through the ranks. Over two decades, her experience spanned multiple facilities and roles, with her most recent as Assistant Superintendent at Smith TC. Her new responsibilities include managing staff and overseeing operations at the transitional center. "Deidra has demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout her career and has been a dedicated team member who consistently leads by example," said Commissioner Tyrone Oliver, in a statement obtained by the Georgia Department of Corrections.
Edwards' educational background includes an Associate of Applied Science from Southeastern Technical College, and she continued her academic journey to earn a Bachelor of Science and a Masters in Criminal Justice from Troy University. With a focus on continued professional development, her credentials have been bolstered through departmental training in areas ranging from Basic Correctional Officer Training to Emergency Medical Instructor.
The Smith Transitional Center, which aims to prepare residents for reentry into society, is set to benefit from Edwards' extensive experience in counseling and management. The GDC expects her to bring a fresh perspective to the institution, coupled with a firm grasp on the nuances of correctional management. Edwards has also been recognized for her stint as Acting Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment at Georgia SP before its closure in 2022, although she then transitioned to Coastal SP as Strategic Intervention Program Coordinator, as detailed by the same press release.
