A harrowing incident at Thomas Jefferson High School came to a stirring resolution thanks to the quick actions of several students. On April 14, a student engaged in swim practice began to drown, but was saved by the prompt response of classmates who noticed the emergency unfolding. The Denver Police Department relayed the event on their official Facebook page, describing how the student sank to the bottom of the pool during warm-ups and how their peers immediately intervened to rescue them from potential tragedy.
According to the Denver Police Department, which detailed the students' decisive actions, one of the students noticed the struggling swimmer and called for them to surface. When the swimmer did not respond, two other individuals did not hesitate, plunging into the water to bring them up. Once at the surface, it became clear that the victim was unresponsive, their lips having turned blue. Further support was rallied from other students, who assisted in hauling the unconscious student out of the water. A life was then rescued by the quick commencement of CPR by a student, successfully reviving the victim before the emergency medical services arrived on the scene.
The Denver Police Department's social media acknowledgment serves as an official commendation for the bravery demonstrated by Hector, Sally, Olivia, Nicholas, and Sydney. Their cooperative efforts in a time of crisis effectively saved a fellow student's life. In a Facebook post dated May 18, the Denver Police detail these events and conclude with the announcement of a Citizen's Appreciation Award being conferred upon each of the rescuers by Commander Bell, a testament to the character and valor they displayed.
