A tragic incident unfolded on the westbound US-6 last Wednesday, as confirmed by the Utah Department of Public Safety. A BMW motorcycle, driven by a 57-year-old man from the Netherlands, collided with the back of a semi-truck's tanker trailer around 12:30 pm near milepost 268. It appears the semi, which was moving more slowly up a steep grade with its hazard lights activated, was hit by the motorcycle that failed to adjust its speed accordingly. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, the accident led to significant disruptions on the highway.
At the time of the collision, a third vehicle passed by, receiving only minor damage from the scattered debris of the accident. Meanwhile, the highway was swarmed with concerns of a hazardous material leak. However, it turned out to be a false alarm, with the substances found on the road later identified as oil and gasoline from the damaged motorcycle. Authorities reported that the semi driver was unharmed in the crash, as the weather conditions were clear with no visual obstructions reported.
The aftermath of the crash saw westbound lanes of the highway closed for an hour before one lane was reopened to traffic, while eastbound lanes remained unaffected. The identity of the Dutch national has not been publicly released pending notification of next of kin.
