Commuters in the Bay Area experienced significant setbacks today as an early morning fire at San Leandro Station led to widespread service disruptions across several BART lines. According to a report by Hoodline, the fire started around 5:10 AM, effectively shutting down the Blue, Green, and Orange lines in sections between Lake Merritt, Berryessa, and Dublin/Pleasanton stations. BART turned to social media to advise passengers to find alternate routes and to confirm that the Yellow and Red lines were running as usual.
Service has now been fully restored across all fifty BART stations from 5:45 AM this morning, despite an estimated 6 to 8 hours to rectify the situation, as originally stated by BART. Passengers whose routes were affected by the Green Line suspension could breathe significantly easier, thanks to the offered alternative options, which included longer trains on the Orange Line and redirection to a Blue Line train at Bay Fair for those headed toward San Francisco. To accommodate the increased ridership and to ensure full system access, although with some transferring, trains are running at reduced speeds between Bay Fair and Coliseum stations, per BART.
The cause of the fire, which was reported just before the morning commute rush, remains a mystery. It resulted in stations with no service being swiftly closed down. Repairs were swift to follow, with limited service being restored yesterday approximately at 5:30 PM between Berryessa and Bay Fair and Bay Fair and Dublin/Pleasanton stations before full service resumed Wednesday morning.
