Early this morning, a tragic incident on I-77 North in Iredell County prompted an extended closure of the highway, following a fatal collision that put a halt to the early rush of vehicles heading towards Charlotte. According to WBTV, the collision involved a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado, which was driving southward in the northbound lane, and consequently collided head-on with a tractor-trailer near Exit 42 for the US-21 Charlotte Highway around 2 a.m.
The driver of the Silverado, Eric Anthony Pompa, aged 31, was reportedly ejected from his vehicle despite wearing a seatbelt and succumbed to his injuries at the scene, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Pompa's impairment may have been a contributory factor in the accident, there was an extensive jam stretching back for about five miles as of 6:15 a.m. amid efforts by officials to channel traffic away from the impacted stretch of the interstate. The driver of the tractor-trailer managed to survive the ordeal, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, as noted by QC News.
As per WCNC, the aftermath of the collision saw the tractor-trailer, which had overturned and caught fire, needing to be addressed by emergency services for several hours; consequently, this led authorities to initiate a detour via Highway 21 to mitigate the disruptions posed to the morning commute by the ongoing investigations and clearance activities on I-77 North at Mile Marker 42, much to the chagrin of motorists looking to traverse the route connecting Troutman and its environs.
State authorities have projected that the interstate might be reopened in the later hours of the morning, tentatively after 11 a.m., with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol expressing its commitment to "do all we can" in order to maintain a smooth traffic flow in the area, following the intricacies of the cleanup process, said an official while speaking to the public, this information was captured by WBTV.
