An early season brush fire sparked near Portland International Raceway (PIR) and Heron Lakes Golf Course on Friday afternoon, drawing a swift response from Portland Fire & Rescue. The incident, which resulted in a slash pile catching fire, was quickly contained thanks to the efforts of the firefighters and the fortunate circumstance of the surrounding vegetation still being largely green. Portland Fire & Rescue shared details of the incident in a social media post, mentioning that the cause of the fire remains unknown.
While attending to the fire near PIR, "Fortunately, this slash pile was isolated," said Portland Fire & Rescue on social media, highlighting the timely intervention of firefighters in preventing further spread. Amid the response to the incident, the agency took the opportunity to educate the public about fire safety, particularly emphasizing the proper disposal of smoking materials. They advised on the necessity of fully extinguishing smoking materials by "completely submerging items into water prior to discarding," which might well avert potential hazards.
