As the eighth anniversary of Sophie Reeder's disappearance comes around, Fort Lauderdale Police and her family continue to seek closure, with a substantial reward still unclaimed. The teenager, who was 15 at the time, went missing on May 19, 2017, after being seen around 10 p.m. near her home on Citrus Isle. In an ongoing effort to find answers, local authorities remind the public that a $25,000 reward remains on the table for information leading to Reeder's location or an arrest in connection to her disappearance, as Local 10 News reported.
Detectives previously obtained surveillance footage that captured Reeder strolling along Davie Boulevard in the early morning hours following her last sighting. Haloed by the artificial glow of street lamps, the footage featured Reeder donning a brown fur coat, a black dress, and red Converse sneakers, completed with white headphones, according to WSVN.
The investigation, which encountered twists and turns over the years, has run through a gamut of grim possibilities—from human trafficking to abduction, and even murder. Private investigator John Rode, in reviewing the efforts of the law enforcement, indicated the heavy lean on the side of the authorities towards potentially sinister outcomes. "Now they’re looking at this case as a very, very serious crime -- either human trafficking, abduction or possibly murder,” said Rode in a statement referenced by Local 10 News.
Reeder, known to have battled undiagnosed depression and anxiety, frequented areas around Stranahan High School, where she briefly attended. Police searches led them to a nearby home in Fort Lauderdale, close to the school. The search turned up various items, including twenty-five cellphones and a pair of headphones—a detail difficult to overlook given Reeder was sporting such when last seen. No direct connection to Reeder's case was established with the seized items, as reported by WSVN.
Authorities continue to press for any scrap of information that might bring resolution to this prolonged inquiry. Detective Jennifer Saint-Jean can be reached at 954-828-5570, and the Fort Lauderdale Police Department still accepts tips at [email protected].
