The El Paso County Sheriff's Office has commenced the annual National Correctional Officers Week, a period from May 4 to May 10 dedicated to acknowledging the hardworking men and women serving as correctional officers. This observance, enacted through a proclamation by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, aims to shine a spotlight on those who oversee the incarceration and rehabilitation of individuals in the nation's correctional facilities. At the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Detention Bureau, this includes a dedicated staff of 450 sworn and professional members.
Services provided by these individuals at the El Paso County Jail are extensive and range from Court Services to Inmate Property, and from Intake and Release to Floor Security in addition to delivering essential medical and mental health services, they're also tasked with the overarching mission of ensuring the safety and welfare of approximately 1,200 inmates, a daunting task that involves constant vigilance and attention, without the luxury of an off-season or a moment's complacency, according to El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal expressed his esteem for the Bureau's personnel, as per El Paso County Sheriff's Office, where he noted, “The men and women working behind the walls of the El Paso County Jail demonstrate exceptional commitment, and I deeply respect their efforts,” going on to highlight the challenging situations many inmates face upon arrival, particularly those with "serious physical or mental health challenges."
