El Paso Independent School District has spotlighted its most excellent educators and support staff in a recent awards ceremony. According to El Paso ISD, the 2024-25 Teacher of the Year and Educational Support Personnel of the Year were honored on Thursday for their dedication and contributions across the schools and departments.
Standing out among their peers, Sandra Iglesias of Cielo Vista Elementary and Mary Bejarano from Hornedo Middle School claimed the titles of Elementary and Secondary Teacher of the Year, respectively. Iglesias is praised for turning her classroom into a place where learning thrives through imaginative, hands-on experiences. Conversely, Bejarano, referred to by students as "Miss B," fosters an inclusive atmosphere and underlines that "Everybody has a VOICE because everybody MATTERS," as per El Paso ISD.
The support staff was not left without recognition. Monica Avina from Crockett Elementary and Alejandra Hernandez of Polk Elementary were both acknowledged for their outstanding leadership, school spirit, and community engagement. "This group represents the heart of El Paso ISD," Superintendent Diana Sayavedra told El Paso ISD, underscoring the positive impact these individuals have on students' lives.
Three additional accolades, the Inspire, Empower, and Thrive Awards, were introduced this year in collaboration with Raiz Federal Credit Union. Tony Martinez from Jefferson High School snagged the Inspire Award for his mentorship, whereas Simon Chandler's advocacy efforts in inclusive practices earned him the Empower Award. Claudia Cardoza, a custodian recognized with the Thrive Award, was applauded for her dedication to providing a welcoming environment day by day. The ceremony featured hosts Hillary Floren and Daniel Veale, who contributed to the lively and heartfelt atmosphere.
