
A tragic incident unfolded earlier today in Statesville when a person riding an electric scooter was fatally struck by a car, the collision resulting in the scooter rider's death despite being rushed to a local hospital after the fact; the incident was confirmed by various reports.
According to WBTV, the crash occurred around 6 a.m. on Davie Avenue, close to the downtown area, Statesville police indicated that the individual on the scooter was hit by a Volkswagen driven by a 39-year-old man, which led to the rider sustaining critical injuries and being taken to the hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries, and the name of the deceased has not been released pending family notification.
WCNC included that emergency responders found the scooter rider badly injured at the scene and that despite being transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital, the rider's life could not be saved, information on what might have led to the fatal crash has not been reported as the investigation continues.
Further insight comes from a social media post by the Statesville Police Department, where they revealed the driver of the Volkswagen as Matthew Miller, 39, of Lenoir and stated "emergency personnel responded to a traffic incident involving a 2024 Volkswagen and an electric scooter," the post, shared on their Facebook page, also urges anyone with information on the incident to contact the Statesville Police Department to assist with their ongoing investigation into the collision.
