Over the weekend, Fabens became the backdrop for a blend of celebration and education, as the Peter J. Herrera Station, manned by deputies from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, engaged with residents during a Mother’s Day and Resource Fair. The fair, hosted by Cigna Healthcare, provided an opportunity for deputies to discuss crucial issues, including identity theft, medical identity theft, and the hazards of drunk driving with Fabens' senior community.

According to El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte, the event also allowed for the distribution of wheel locks to Kia and Hyundai vehicle owners, a proactive step in addressing a spate of auto thefts that has touched numerous communities. "We’re proud to support events that keep our community informed, engaged, and protected," stated Sheriff Ugarte, highlighting the department’s commitment to public safety and awareness.

Beyond the dissemination of wheel locks, the deputies handed out a variety of educational materials and safety resources. These included pamphlets and guides designed to help seniors navigate the complexities of protecting their identities in a digital age, where the threat of financial exploitation looms as an ever-present menace.
