In a nighttime emergency off the Massachusetts coast, three fishermen found their fortitude tested when their 23-foot vessel succumbed to the hostile embrace of the Atlantic. The trio was plucked from the precarious lip of their capsized boat near Hyannisport after it overturned in treacherous waters. A report by NBC Boston stated that the men were cold and wet but displayed a stoic ability to ambulate unaided after their harrowing experience.
Conveyed by another vessel that had fortunately come upon the distressed men shortly before midnight, the capsizing incident, according to Boston 25 News, left the crew in the water for an estimated 5 to 10 minutes — a brief but potentially fatal period given the absence of personal flotation devices or survival suits. The Hyannis Fire Chief cited choppy conditions as a likely contributor to the disaster.
The Coast Guard's involvement brought official oversight to a rescue otherwise characterized by the quick thinking and decisive action of local emergency services and the Good Samaritan boat's crew. After the transfer to a Hyannis Fire Rescue boat, the men were returned to Lewis Bay, escaping their ordeal without serious injury.
