A tragic incident in Forsyth County has left a community mourning the loss of a young life. A 4-year-old boy was killed in an ATV crash that also injured a 16-year-old, authorities from the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office have confirmed. The accident occurred on Sunday night on Valley Stream Drive, near Campground Road, where, according to the Sheriff's Office, the teenage driver attempted a sharp right turn that led to the vehicle flipping over.
In a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, officials said the teen hit the brakes, turned sharply to the right, causing the ATV to overturn. Both the teen and the young boy were ejected from the vehicle. It appears the teen survived with minor injuries and was attended to at North Fulton Medical Center. The names of the victims have not been released, as the investigation remains ongoing.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and, distressingly, neither of the boys were wearing helmets at the time of the incident. The 4-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office Traffic Specialist Unit is spearheading the case, though it has not been indicated if charges will be pursued.
According to a news release by AJC, Stacie Miller, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office, explained, "The ATV was traveling too fast for that maneuver, causing it to overturn." This incident raises concerns about ATV safety and, the use of protective gear, particularly for young children.
