Pierre’s journey from shelter to stability is a testament to the supportive programs in the region that have helped him rebuild his life. According to a recent profile from Washington County's housing news, Pierre turned a corner when he secured two years' rental assistance through a Rapid Rehousing program, coupled with crucial case management support.
Originally moving to the Pacific Northwest for a job that didn't pan out, Pierre found himself quickly spiraling into a homeless situation. However, he managed to persistently stay engaged in work, first as a janitor, and then later on to decide to pursue a career in healthcare, a field he was familiar with. It was during this precarious time that he stayed at Just Compassion shelter, maintaining a resolve to look for ways to move forward in life.
With hard-fought determination, Pierre not only found a place to call home but also embarked on a career path that would offer him the financial and emotional stability he longed for. His decision to become a CNA was fueled by his passion for healthcare and the impact it has on others' lives. As Pierre told Washington County Housing Services, "I like working with people, and healthcare allows me to directly affect other’s lives in positive ways daily."
Support also came from the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) Career Start Program, which awarded Pierre full tuition coverage for his CNA training and examination fees. This pivotal support allowed him to put his full focus on learning, free from the stress of financial insecurity. "Without this help I would not have been able to get where I am," Pierre said in a reflection of his journey.
Now, with a 100% passing score on his skills assessment and a stable job within walking distance from his home, Pierre's story underscores the efficacy of the Supportive Housing Services (SHS) measure. Funded by regional voters, SHS aims to offer proven solutions for those experiencing homelessness, including rent assistance, case management, and shelter services that helped to lift Pierre onto his feet. His success extends beyond his professional life, as stability has also enabled him to reconnect with his six children. As Pierre fondly shares, being able to respond to his kids' simple requests, like, "hey Dad, do you have $20?" with a yes is a profound marker of the ground he has gained.
